Objective & background of the course

Objective

This training program aims to provide participants with a holistic understanding of GHG accounting, CBAM regulations, and climate policies relevant to India’s steel and mining sectors. It covers fundamental principles of GHG emissions measurement, mitigation strategies, and compliance mechanisms within global trade regulations.

Through practical applications, real-world case studies, and expert insights, the course enables industry professionals to navigate regulatory challenges, integrate sustainable practices, and enhance corporate climate resilience.

Background:

India has set an ambitious target to decarbonize its steel sector in alignment with its Net Zero emission goal by 2070. In December 2024, India became the first country to introduce the Green Steel Taxonomy, a significant step toward defining and standardizing low-carbon steel production. While a globally accepted definition of green steel does not yet exist, this initiative represents a key milestone for the Ministry of Steel and the broader mission to transition towards a low-carbon economy. The taxonomy aims to reduce the emission intensity to 2.2 tCO₂ per tonne of steel by 2030, ensuring India's competitiveness in the global market while fostering sustainable growth.

Simultaneously, the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will become fully operational in 2026, imposing carbon tariffs on imports, including iron, steel, and aluminium. This regulation poses a challenge for Indian exporters but also presents an opportunity to enhance competitiveness through carbon-conscious production. India's proactive approach, including the launch of the Green Steel Taxonomy, helps offset the impact of CBAM by encouraging industries to adopt sustainable practices.

As the steel sector is considered a hard-to-abate industry, a Just Transition is necessary to support decarbonization while ensuring economic and social stability. Key strategies include the development of a domestic carbon pricing system, aligning with international carbon regulations, and improving data management on carbon footprints, supply chains, and logistics. Businesses must analyze CBAM's potential implications and adapt strategic measures to remain competitive.

Recognizing these challenges and opportunities, Net Zero Think and Metalogic PMS has developed a comprehensive training program to equip industry professionals with knowledge of Green Steel Taxonomy and CBAM compliance, enabling them to align with global climate objectives and regulatory frameworks.
